Should You Make A Switch To Clean-Crafted™ Wine? | South Austin Moms

There is A LOT of buzz around going green & clean and we are here for it! When we know better, we do better and we are healthier for it and so is our earth for future generations. So, we are all about knowing what is in the products, foods, and beverages we put in and on our bodies, but we always assumed that wine was just fermented grapes. Right? At South Austin Moms we discovered the Clean-Crafted™ difference two years ago from one delicious bottle we were gifted, and it only got better from there!

Scout & Cellar was founded by Sarah Shadonix, litigation lawyer turned wine geek. When she started having debilitating headaches after just one glass during her sommelier training, like a good lawyer, she set out to investigate and discover why. What she found was that there are over 250 FDA approved additives that are commonly added to mass produced wines. Ferrocyanide, ammonium phosphate, copper sulfate, mega purple and GMO ingredients, just to name a few. This was a lightbulb moment for Sarah. Figurately… mind-blowing. Literally… head-splitting. Sarah has often been heard saying, “Chemicals belong in swimming pools, not wine.”

That’s when Scout & Cellar was born in Farmers Branch, TX! Sarah put boots to the ground to scout the world for the purest grapes and wines. S&C grapes are grown naturally without ANY synthetic pesticides or fertilizers, because good grapes don’t need them. They partner with small, family owned, sustainable, organic and/or biodynamic farms… now supporting over 2000 acres of regenerative farming! These grapes are tended by actual people, not mass produced by industrial agricultural methods.

The average bottle of mass produced wine can contain up to 16g of added sugar (that’s more than a glazed donut!). What the heck are the additives & sugars doing our wine anyway? One, we are a sugar addicted nation. It took us only a couple of bottles to acclimate and enjoy truly, naturally, delicious wines without all the extra sweetness. Two, the additives and sugars are there to mask flaws! When wine is made in the mass produced method, all the good grapes and bad grapes are dumped in together making preservatives, synthetic additives, and added sugars to change the flavor profile necessary, so every bottle tastes the same year after year. Look up “Mega Purple” if you dare.

What about sulfites? Sulfites are naturally occurring antioxidant and antibacterial compounds in grapes that protect the wine from oxygen until it reaches your glass! Because of the slow-crafted, intentional way these wines are made, they require very little sulfur additions to remain stable. The FDA allows up to 350ppm (parts per million), which some people find gives them adverse side-effects… like headaches and stomachaches among others. Most S&C wines have less that 50ppm, and ALL have less than 100ppm. Sulfites are added to preserve and enhance flavor in mass produced wines. S&C wines are so naturally delicious nothing needs enhancing!

Lastly, Scout & Cellar wines are put through TWO rigorous independent lab tests to ensure that there are ZERO chemicals in any of the the wines that get the Clean-Crafted™ stamp of approval. We’ve heard that Sarah has been known to ship thousands of bottles back to Europe when they didn’t meet the standard, because of Scout & Cellar’s Do The Right Thing Guarantee.
