Meet Nicole - Greater Austin Moms

This South Austin momma has impressed me from the very beginning of my search for great resources for you! Meet Nicole Perez, owner and director of Pint-Size Playhouse, a licensed home preschool, which combines the best of so many educational approaches into a playful learning community. Read on to hear more from Nicole about her family, her favorite things about Austin, and a surprising personal tid-bit that made me a tad-bit envious…

Where are you from originally and how long have you lived in town?

I was born in Galveston TX and moved to Austin just a few days shy of my 3rd birthday on August 16, 1977. You’re probably wondering how in the world I remembered the exact date….Well, I’ll tell ya! My parents were Elvis Presley fans and sadly the day we moved to Austin TX was the day Elvis passed away.

How old are your kids now…

My kiddos are 12 and 17.

I can’t wait to hear what you love to do with your big kids, because I am right behind you with mine.

My family loves to eat!!! We go out to eat way more than we should! We have our favorite restaurants (Magnolia Café) but we like trying new places around town too! Currently, we are on a plant-based/Whole-foods kick and it’s nice to see so many restaurants with plant-based/gluten free options. Good Job Austin!

I agree! I love that we always have options wherever we eat out, even with various food allergies in our family. What else do you love about living in Austin?

One of my favorite things about living in Austin…. the people! I admire the kindness, open-mindedness, and compassion I’ve seen demonstrated and personally experienced here in Austin. I’m reminded how friendly Austinites are when I visit other cities and states. I love our city vibe!

Tell us about Pint-Size Playhouse! How did you get started and what spurs you on?

I’m the proud owner/director of an award-winning Licensed Home Preschool in South Austin, Pint-Size Playhouse. I had the wonderful opportunity of staying at home with my son for the first 4 years, but when it was time to go back to work (previously a certified parent educator and professional nanny for high-profile families) I couldn’t find a quality preschool that I could afford for my son. In my extensive child care search, I either found the center was a good fit, but $1,200 a month or it was affordable, but had major violations or incompliances with the state. I decided to take all my early child development and business education and create a small preschool for parents like me! Pint-Size Playhouse has always been my mission to offer affordable, quality child care and education for working parents.

Are you involved in anything else within the community?

I’m not currently involved in any community projects at this time. BUT….I’d like to give a shout out to Elisabeth McAllister who owns/operates Shine Your Light Yoga. Ms. Elisabeth travels to our preschool and teaches a peaceful yoga class once a month.

I was just on her website and I’m so impressed. I hope I’ll get to meet her soon and introduce her here! How has this community been instrumental in getting you to where you are now?

I really appreciate the articles that South Austin Moms shares, but the ‘Resources’ page is hands-down one of the best I’ve seen! Thanks S-A-M for keeping us connected!

Oh my goodness, you’re welcome! That is a shout-out I wasn’t expecting! It is truly my pleasure to provide a one-stop website where moms can the resources they need. I have just one last question… what’s one thing people would be surprised to know about you, Nicole?

The one thing most people don’t know about me is that I was born with only ¼ of my sweat glands! Crazy cool, huh? I literally don’t sweat y’all!

Well how lucky are you?! You were apparently made for hot Texas summers, and we are so glad you landed in Austin all those years ago and dug your roots deep!
