Meet a Mom: Lisa Wolfe-Schacter of Blue Scilla CranioSacral - Greater Austin Moms

Hi Lisa! First up, let’s learn a bit about you and your family:
My name is Lisa Wolfe-Schacter. I’ve been married for five years, but my husband and I have known each other since we were born. We were friends throughout our lives, and we started our romantic lives together when we were in our late 30’s. I have 4 biological children, 1 living child, and we are foster parents as well. My first daughter died during delivery at 40 weeks, my second daughter was stillborn due to complications from Trisomy 21 (Down Syndrome), my living child had a twin who I miscarried also due to complications with Trisomy 21, but my son, who is now 5, survived and is such a joy! He is diagnosed as being on the Autism Spectrum. He is bright, inquisitive, and hilarious. He brings a light to my life that I never knew existed until he came along. As I mentioned, we are also a proud fostering family, and we currently have one child placed with us through the CPS system. She is a delight and we all pour our love into raising her, even my son.

What an incredible mother you are. Anything about your background you’d like to share or any hobbies?
I grew up in the Detroit area of Michigan. We moved to Austin (by way of Phoenix and then Milwaukee) for a career opportunity for my husband in March of 2019 and we have been in Austin ever since. My background is actually in education. I taught primary grades, in various roles, for 15 years and I have a Masters in Elementary Education. Through all that time as an educator I also was a massage therapist and Reiki practitioner (for 18 years). I loved my time working with clients in my evenings and on weekends because it required me to ground myself and leave behind all the stresses of the day.

My favorite hobby is wilderness camping. I used to lead backcountry wilderness trips: white water canoe trips, sea kayaking trips, and backcountry hiking trips in Michigan and the Canadian Shield. I love being immersed in the wilderness and especially being on or in the water. There is something about the crystal clear, icy cold Lake Superior and its tributaries that renew the soul.

That vision of Lake Superior sounds dreamy! Now on to your business. Let’s meet Blue Scilla CranioSacral.
Blue Scilla CranioSacral is a rebrand of Blue Scilla Restorative Healing which was based in Milwaukee. When we moved my family and my business here to Austin (with a brief intermission for COVID) I decided to rebrand and hone in on the modality I believe in the most for deep, lasting change in the body. I took great care in creating the perfect logo that would be meaningful to me and what it is that I do, and I took the advice of my dear friend and colleague, Renee Kreisner of Prism Speech ATX, who encouraged me to share my love and expertise in this field with the community.

To sum it up, Blue Scilla CranioSacral offers CranioSacral Therapy to all populations in all stages of life. You may be saying, “That’s nice, but what is CranioSacral Therapy? CranioSacral Therapy (CST) is a light touch form of bodywork that helps to find and facilitates the release of restrictions throughout the body. Now, because it involves such a light touch, people often lump CranioSacral therapy into the realm of alternative healing modalities and dismiss it. However, CST is a fully recognized and highly specific modality that requires specialized training. Its benefits are utilized in hospitals, such as the Cleveland Clinic, and is an excellent stand alone or complementary therapy for almost any concerns that ail you. Additionally, because of its gentle nature it is appropriate for all, from brand newborn babies all the way up to elders.

So what does CST treat?

What sets Blue Scilla CranioSacral apart from others is our collaborative care model. My main office is housed within the Harmony Collaborative Care Center at 2222 Western Trails Blvd. Within the Clinic we have Renee Kreisner M.S., CCC-SLP, Sunayana Weber BS, IBCLC, RLC, and myself. We also have professionals in the fields of Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, and more who will come to Harmony for sessions with our clients when requested.
I strongly believe in an integrative approach to wellness. While I am an advanced, highly trained therapist and I trust wholeheartedly in the benefits of CST, I also know that combining CST with complementary therapies will maximize wellness. This is why I am always happy to refer to other professionals in the wellness field when needed or offer a co-treatment plan with the collaborative care experience.

Our mission is to Give Moms the Gift of Time, any time-saving tips you can share?
As a mom with a 5 year old, my personal big time saving tip is double line your kiddos mattress! It is common for children to struggle with night time wetting, my son is no different and, in fact, he will often wet through nighttime pull ups. So, to combat the lengthy nighttime changes I dress his bed with a waterproof mattress protector, his sheets, then another layer of a waterproof mattress cover and then another layer of sheets. That way if he wets through at night, I can just change his clothing and pull up quickly, peel the top waterproof layer off the bed, and get him back down quickly without turning on lights or disrupting his sleep too much. I also take him to the potty about 2 ½ hrs after he goes to sleep to see if he’ll pee or if he needs to be changed to help prevent wet throughs.

Also, as a parent who has moved around a bit since my son was born, I encourage you to reach out to your community for support. I remember feeling so isolated after the first move when my son was just six weeks old. Parenting is isolating enough, especially in the beginning, and then adding a move on to it can be an even bigger challenge. So, I encourage you to be brave (because I acknowledge that it is hard) and reach out to this community. You will find support here, you will find your tribe, and you are not alone in this journey.

What are your biggest challenges you are currently facing in your business?
I think the biggest challenge I am facing is converting my love and passion for this work into a self owned business. I have never been extremely business minded. So all the logistical things, especially the financials/numbers are challenging to me.

Where do you see your business in the next 5 years?
Within the next five years, I see Blue Scilla CranioSacral as a staple in the community. I see being able to provide therapy and relief from symptoms to many and being a vital part of the effort to create a collaborative environment throughout wellness care in Greater Austin.

And now for the fun stuff.
Favorite restaurant, coffee place, place to grab drinks?
COVID shutdowns really stunted my growth as an Austinite. I’d love to hear people’s suggestions about where the best places to go for food, coffee, and other beverages are. (Ok, SAM community – let’s help her out. Send your suggestions to Lisa!)

If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go and how long would you stay?
This is a tough question, but at the moment, if I could travel anywhere in the world, I think I would want to tour and do some backcountry camping (ideally canoeing) in all of the national parks in the United States. After I completed that, I would want to move on to do the same thing in other countries. How long I would stay would be dependent on the backcountry route and requirements, but a minimum of 5 days per location. I need that calmness and serenity of the wilderness to renew my spirit.

And finally, something interested about yourself that others may not know…
Something others may not know about me is that I am socially awkward. I do okay in small groups, ideally one-on-one situations, but even then I am constantly evaluating how to interact with the person to whom I’m speaking. I think this is the largest contributor to me being an introvert, because it takes a lot of effort to be social and interact with people. I do however crave connection, and once you get to know me and I you, I will be there for you through most anything. I am the kind of person who likes to skip the small talk and get into the meat of who we are as people.

As I mentioned previously, Blue Scilla CranioSacral’s South Austin office is housed within Harmony Collaborative Care Clinic.
We are having a Grand Opening event on Thursday, September 29th from 5:30-8pm.

It is family friendly, open to the public, and to any perinatal or pediatric professionals.
We will have light refreshments, free face painting and activities for the children.
